Climate Justice and Health in a Gendered World: Responsibilities, Risks, and Response
Synopsis:
Climate change often seems like a global collective "we" problem. However, not everyone holds the same responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions, not everyone feels equal impacts of rising temperatures, and not everyone responds to the crisis in the same way. In this talk I will explore, from a global and domestic perspective, the foundations of climate justice as a lens to think about the current causes and consequences of climate change for women and health. I hope you can carry this lens with you to examine the climate crises that emerge throughout your life and career. Additionally, I will introduce two frameworks that examine gendered responses that hinder the speed and magnitude of the necessary transition away from fossil fuels.
Christopher "Todd" Beer, Associate Professor of Sociology at Lake Forest College, conducts research and teaches about the sociology of climate change, climate change social movements, and cultural globalization. His research sites include communities and organizations throughout Kenya, and major protest events in Chicago, Washington DC, New York, and Paris. His current research examines the ways in which global cultural norms around environmental conservation, gender quality, and education as a formal pathway to development interact in a rural Maasai community in southern Kenya. Additionally, his research examines support for anticapitalist policies among climate change protesters, support for global climate justice among US protestors, and the opinions and actions of NGOs throughout Africa that are members of the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance.
