Practice Gap
While women are no longer underrepresented for many areas of STEM at the collegiate level, stark gender disparities nonetheless remain in professional advancement and leadership positions. This lecture will present experimental evidence of gender bias within STEM and healthcare, demonstrate its consequences for women’s engagement in these fields, and discuss innovative interventions aimed at increasing the representation of women and other gender diversity at leadership levels.
General Program Learning Objectives
As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:
- Relate existing social psychological research on the content and impact of gender stereotypes to academic and healthcare environments.
- Identify the difference between hostile vs. benevolent sexism and explicit vs. implicit bias and their differential impacts in the workplace.
- Recite evidence of science faculty and supervisors’ gender biases in the evaluation and treatment of students and employees.
- Recognize the patterns by which women’s qualifications and capacities for STEM are downgraded in various contexts.
- Advocate for interventions that can reduce gender biases, including restructured academic policies.
