Seminar:
Understanding and Reducing Gender Bias in STEM and Healthcare

Abstract:
Despite efforts to recruit and retain more women, a stark gender disparity remains within certain STEM fields. What underlies this persistent underrepresentation and what can be done to reduce obstacles to women’s full participation in STEM? In this talk, Dr. Corinne Moss-Racusin will present experimental evidence of gender bias within STEM, and its direct consequences for women’s engagement and participation. She will then discuss ongoing research testing evidence-based interventions aimed at reducing this gender bias. Throughout, Dr. Moss-Racusin will highlight implications for academic meritocracy, sustainable diversity, and gender parity across STEM and healthcare fields.

Dr. Moss-Racusin studies the ways in which stereotypes contribute to inequality and perpetuate occupational gender segregation. She is particularly interested in understanding and ameliorating gender bias throughout STEM fields. She earned her B.A. from New York University, Ph.D. from Rutgers University, and did her postdoctoral work at Yale University. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institution. Her work has been published in prominent outlets (such as Science, Nature, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) and is regularly covered by the media. She has been honored with numerous awards, including APA’s Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology, and the APS Rising Star Award. Additionally, she was gratified to be invited to present her work at the White House.
