College of Health Professions White Coat Ceremony

The College of Health Professions held its annual White Coat Ceremony on April 12, as students in CHP programs, including doctor of nursing practice, pathologists’ assistant, physical therapy, physician assistant, clinical psychology and clinical counseling received the white coats that signify the beginning of their clinical education.

CHP Vice Dean Jeff Damaschke, PT ’03, DPT ’04, PhD, associate professor of physical therapy, described the ceremony as a rite of passage marking the transition from the classroom to the clinic. “This ceremony will join the symbol of the white coat with the virtues of altruism, responsibility, empathy, honor, respect and compassion for all patients, their family members and friends,” Dr. Damaschke said.  

CHP alumnus Michael Kordecki, DPT ’03, also spoke during the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of taking responsibility for the health and well-being of others, and the satisfaction that comes from making a positive impact on someone else’s life. “Each of you has chosen a career path based on helping others, and that’s a responsibility you should never take lightly,” Dr. Kordecki said, before encouraging the students to wear their white coats “humbly, and in service of others.”

Following the presentation of the white coats, CHP Director of Student Affairs Kristin Mahr, MS ’05, PA-C, concluded the ceremony by leading the students in reciting the Oath of Geneva.
