Life In Discovery
Welcome to the Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine
Advances in medicine have always been fueled by new discoveries. The discovery of germs led to the adoption of life-saving hygienic standards. The discovery of antibiotics led toa breakthrough tin the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. To date, most of this progress has led to improvements in disease prevention or slowing disease progression.
However, biomedical research today is on the verge of a new revolution, one in which the tissue damage caused by disease and injury will be reversed to restore the body to its healthy and functional state. This new revolution is termed “Regenerative Medicine” and, as this name implies, it will deliver new technologies to rebuild and restore the body. Recent progress in understanding stem cell biology has fueled this latest advance in medicine. In addition to embryonic stem cells, recent research has identified stem cells in most parts of the body, creating the possibility that these adult stem cells may also be useful in regenerative therapies.
The motto of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, “Life in Discovery”, is inspired by the example of Dr. Rosalind Franklin, whose fundamental contribution to the knowledge of DNA structure made possible an explosion of new knowledge in cell biology and medicine. Thus, a critical component of our University mission is the acquisition, discovery, and application of knowledge to advance medicine.
As a demonstration of that commitment, the University has recently established a new Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine (CSCRM). As we develop and attract new investigators to join us in this mission, we will focus on generating new knowledge of stem cell biology with the purpose of applying this knowledge to new regenerative therapies. Through the pursuit of scientific studies, we will strive to make real contributions to novel therapies, while educating new scientists and physicians to equip them for this coming revolution in regenerative medicine.
In addition to conducting our research, we intend to expand our efforts in public education and community outreach to encourage community understanding and participation in our mission. I hope as you visit our web site, you will understand our enthusiasm for the opportunities for new knowledge in this field of study.
We welcome your comments and hope that you will join us in our vision.
