The Rosalind Franklin University Summer Research Program and Internships is a special research-based mentoring program for high school students, undergraduates, and technicians conducting research. This program offers a wide variety of scientific and teaching experiences by integrating research activities into the teaching of science at undergraduate science majors as well as graduate students. Our mission is to sponsor undergraduate summer research fellowships and internships by creating an integrated undergraduate and graduate curriculum involving students and faculty members from Lake Forest College and Rosalind Franklin University. These combined educational and research efforts will include the development of courses for undergraduate and graduate students from the two institutions to enable local North Chicago area students to become involved in basic science research. While promoting integration of researchers and educators to the development of effective means of incorporating research into learning and education, students are encouraged to present their research projects at national and international meetings, and to attend journal clubs and Departmental seminar series at Rosalind Franklin University.

We also believe that fostering greater community interest in science is crucial to encourage motivated young people to consider scientific careers and to improve the community’s understanding and appreciation of scientific endeavors. To accomplish this goal, faculty members from Rosalind Franklin University and Lake Forest College will be committed to disseminating research findings to the general public and engage in outreach programs designed to make lab-work science more accessible to the public. This integration process will also include the participation of our graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in outreach programs to encourage and recruit talented students from underrepresented minorities. In particular, the Hispanic population, which is the greatest minority group in Lake County, IL, will greatly benefit from this project because many of the researchers are fluent Spanish speakers and are faculty members of Rosalind Franklin University Outreach Task Force Committee.

This program will also foster numerous educational opportunities for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students as well as undergraduate students. Empirical data collected by students and postdocs will be used to instruct and motivate students about the type of experimental approach available and how to design experiments to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying cell functioning.

Overall, this program will offer a unique research experience for students at many levels because each of the research goals will be accompanied by a specific educational vehicle to provide hands-on experience for undergraduate students. Building this bridge between the Rosalind Franklin University graduate program and the Lake Forest College curriculum will enable outstanding mechanisms for integrating basic science research and discovery into programs accessible to the broader science and non-science community.
