EMHC has a long, distinguished history in the care of mentally ill persons in Illinois. For example, in the 1890s, the Elgin Papers recorded the first physiologic measurements of psychiatric patients ever. It has 1300 admissions annually to its 600 inpatient beds, about half in its civil division and half in its forensic division. Each division has a newly-built state of the art acute treatment center with ample office and conference room space for faculty and trainees. The patient population is primarily Euro-American, African-American and Hispanic. Five faculty from the departments expanding forensic division have special qualifications in forensic psychiatry. Community mental health centers that refer patients to EMHC include DuPage County Health Department, the Ecker Center for Mental Health, the Kenneth Young Center, and the Lake County Mental Health Center, with all of which we have affiliations.
