What is University Sustainability?
The development of a process or management system that helps to create a vibrant campus economy and high quality of life while respecting the need to sustain natural resources and protect the environment. Sustainable programs are those that result from an institution's commitment to environmental, social and economic health, or the "triple bottom line." Sustainability has institutional and individual applicability, and is usually a balancing act. (Vanderbilt University, 2007)
As part of the RFUMS Strategic Plan to advance a University-wide plan that promotes environmental sustainability and incorporates "green" policies (Goal Q4.0), a Sustainability Steering Committee has been formed to develop a planned approach to implementing "green" programs and improving efforts already in place. In addition to that primary committee, five subcommittees (Green Teams) comprised of university faculty, staff and students have been formed under the following categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality.
