Choosing a Service for Mailing

 The University Mail Center services the following USPS services to our staff, faculty and students for the same current rates that a regular USPS post office offers. The University Mail Center also carries Express and Priority boxes, tubes, envelopes and forms free of charge. The University Mail Center does not have boxes or envelopes for purchase, but carry a few recycled boxes for use.

 

First-Class Mail
Postcards, letters, large envelopes and packages containing mailable letters can be sent using First Class Mail.  This service is typically used for personal business correspondence and bills.  1-ounce letter $0.42 (add $0.20 surcharge to postage for all non-machinable First-Class letters exceeding ¼” thickness), 1-Ounce flat (manila envelope) - $0.98 for zones 1-2 and $1.20 for zones 3-9, parcel - $1.18 for zones 1-2 and $1.40 for zones 3-6.  Delivered in 3 days or less.

 

First-Class Mail International
Registered Mail service available beginning at $10.00.  The cost for 1-ounce letter is $0.72 for Rate Groups 1 and 2, $0.94 for Rate Groups 3-6.  All surcharges, dimensional weight and balloon rates now apply to international as well as domestic mail services.  For complete list of countries by Rate Group, refer to the International Mail Manual (IMM), available at the University Post Office or at www.usps.com.

Domestic Priority Mail 
Large or thick envelopes, tubes and packages containing mailable items can be sent using Priority Mail.  Domestic rates currently being at $4.80.  This service is typically used to send documents, gifts and merchandise.  Flat rate boxes are available in multiple sizes for $9.80.  The large flat rate box is $12.95 for domestic addresses and $10.95 for APO/FPO.  Priority Mailing options by weight are also available.  Price will reflect the zone of the destination.  Priority Mail not packaged in Official USPS Priority Packaging may be subject to Balloon Rate or Dimensional Weight Pricing.  Customs Form required. Delivered in 2-3 days.

 

Priority Mail International
Available to over 190 countries for items weighing up to the country’s maximum weight limit.  Flat-rate envelope of one price of $9 to Canada and Mexico and One price of $11.95 to all other countries with a maximum weight of 4 pounds.  Customs Form required.  Registered Mail service without insurance is available for a fee.  Refer to IMM for list of countries that accept Registered Mail.  Flat-rate box options are available for $23.95 to Canada and Mexico and $38.95 to all other countries. Large flat rate boxes to Canada and Mexico are $29.95 and $49.95 to all other countries. Sender may also ship by weight up to 70 pounds (refer to www.usps.com). Tracking available, limited indemnity coverage provided at no extra cost, insurance available for a fee.  Average delivery 6-10 days to major destinations.

Express Mail
Letters, large or thick envelopes, tubes and packages containing mailable items can be sent using Express Mail starting at $12.60 (depending on destination and weight).  Domestic flat-rate envelopes are $16.50 regardless of weight and destination.   This guaranteed service includes tracking and insurance up to $100.  Additional insurance may be purchased.  Delivery to most destinations is available 365 days a year, with no extra charge for Saturday.  Delivery for Sunday and holidays is available for an additional fee of $12.50.  Free Express Mail envelopes and boxes can be obtained at the University Post Office or by internet at www.usps.com. Delivered in 1-2 days.

 

Express Mail International
Flat-rate envelopes currently are $23.95 to Canada and Mexico, and $25.95 to all other countries.  This guaranteed service includes tracking and insurance up to $100.  Additional insurance may be purchased.  Customs Form required.  Sender may also ship by weight up to 70 pounds (refer to www.usps.com).  Service guaranteed to Australia, China, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea (South Korea), and Japan. Delivered in 3-5 business days.

 

Domestic Post Cards
$0.27 between 3 ½”-4 ¼”.   Post Cards between 4 ¼ “– 6 1/8” are $0.42.  Post Cards outside the maximum limits are assessed an additional charge of $0.20.

 

International Post Cards – Canada and Mexico
$0.72 (all others - $0.94)

 

Parcel Post
Small and large packages, thick envelopes and tubes containing gifts and merchandise can be sent domestically using Parcel Post.  Delivered in 9 days or less.

 

Media Mail
Small and large packages, thick envelopes and tubes can be sent using Media Mail.  Contents are limited to books, film, manuscripts, sound recordings, video tapes and computer media (such as CDs, DVDs and diskettes).  Sometimes called "Book Rate", Media Mail cannot contain advertising.  Media Mail is less expensive than Parcel Post. 

Bound Printed Matter
Small and large packages and thick envelopes can be sent using this service.  Contents are limited to permanently bound sheets of director, advertising or editorial matter, such as catalogs or phone books.  Bound Printed Matter is less expensive than Parcel Post. 

Library Mail
Mail that meets the standards for Package Service.   Library Mail rates are based on the weight of each addressed piece without regard to zone.  Each piece of Library Mail must show in the address or the return address, the name of the following:

Delivery is guaranteed by the United States Postal Service (not the University Mail Center) and provides for a full postage refund if the item is not delivered on time.

International deliveries vary by country of destination. No guarantees are offered by the US Postal Service since they have no control over foreign delivery systems. There is no provision for a refund.
